Block printing, with its unique ability to transform plain cloth into vibrant narratives, remains an ancient craft still widely practiced in India, unlike many others. While Sanganeri, Ajrakh, and Bagh prints enjoy international recognition, independent block printers can be found throughout urban India. As a result, individuals or designers with small enterprises also have access to block prints, unlike printing techniques that require mass orders.
An important lesson from making initial errors was that when designing a block, it is essential to minimize solid areas on the surface of the blocks to allow air to pass through. This helps in preventing bubbles.

Below are photos of custom blocks designed for home textiles, fashion (for 11.11), and for Mata ni Pachedi artisans.

The first photo is of a master block maker from the Prajapati family of Pethapur, Gujarat. Pethapur is an old block-carving center, where long-lasting teak wood blocks are hand-carved using traditional tools and techniques. In the photo, the young maker carves an intricate bougainvillea design in a two-part block.
